Czech It Out

Just got back from Prague... what a GREAT weekend!
BUT, we're a little tired, so I'm gonna need a day to get back to normal, get pictures up and get unpacked (she says, throwing a pair of Evil Eyes on the luggage), plus, my lovely other is having a little knee surgery tomorrow.

I foresee some Man Pains and Grumbles, as well as me feeling very sorry for the immobile guy and keeping him comfortable (when I am around).
So please forgive my slowness in sharing the Great Prague Pictures.

In the meantime (and as a peace offering) I give you this:
"A Blog about food with a little life stirred in"
Now that's my kind of blog!
Have fun!

From Innsbruck, with love, and lemon.

Only about a week and a half late, I decided I really ought to show you around Innsbruck before we head to Prague and I get all backed up with blog posts.

Innsbruck is just under 2 hours (by car) from Munich, and very, very pretty.

It is a relatively sized town in the middle a valley, with a BIG university - goer presence. This may have had something to do with the weekends events, or the fact that Innsbruck is well known for it's medicinal marijuana clinical trials, although that could just be me jumping to conclusions...

There are a lot of little streets lined with even more little apartments, and every building is painted a different shade of pastel.

Everywhere you look, you see those glorious mountains...
And lots, and lots of tram lines.

On the Friday night, after gorging ourselves on the first sushi since DURBAN we found that there was a little concert, and demonstration by the 'rookie' snowboarders, doing rails and other tricks in the centre of town. We watched for a bit, and then sought the comfort of the warm, and age-restricted, Irish Pub.

The next morning, we woke up, stretched, did some star jumps and prepared for the trek to the
Billabong Air & Style contest.

At least I wished we had (it really was a trek). Instead, we did the only logical thing we could think of, and bought some South African wine, which we then proceeded to drink on the way up. It was FAR and STEEP -two of my least favourite adjectives - I needed some encouragement.

Unfortunately (or very fortunately for our soon-to-be cold toes) there was no alcohol allowed in (HORROR!), so we, ever classy, downed our bottle. And off we went...

The Olympic Ski Jump, where the contest was held. Waaaaay up there...
(Note the tram lines!)
Wasn't the view just awful? Those mountains? and that SNOW?

As the sun set, it began to get raaaaather nippy. But, just as we were about to give up all faith in ever being warm again... An angel from heaven approached us.
Ok, more like a guy with a Gluhwein-Backpack-Dispenser.
When our teeth finally stopped chattering, or our ears grew too numb to hear them, the contest started.
Rookies first, then professionals. Doing flicks and jumps and cartwheels and spins, all whilst strapped into their snowboards and (most of the time) landing perfectly. Easy peasy stuff really... yeah, I wish!
Once the contest was over, Pennywise (punk rock, not my thing) played, and we, being the Munich residents we are, went off in search of some Wurst, Bread and Mustard. A typically German meal... and very good for soaking up excess Gluhwein/ Beer you may have consumed.
After that it is pretty much a big blur, but from what my photo's tell me, we had a few more warmer-upper drinks, got a little bit silly-dilly and had a whole lot of fun. Granted, there were headaches in the morning, and some stubborn bits of lemon in my eye (there's only one real way to drink tequila), but it sure was a good weekend.

Times Like These

It times like these, friends birthdays (and birthday parties), emails from family, friends missing you and... tummy bugs that make you miss home.

It is February, which means two very special friends birthdays. And while one is living it up in Aspen, and having a party in Vegas, the other is home, in our 'hood', and having a fabulous party that I can't attend.

I also have a tummy bug. Oh, the glamour!

So I'm sitting here, eating my toast and Marmite (my order of Bovril, via a lucky sod who visited the homeland for a week of braais and boerewors not yet here) and sipping my Five Roses, hoping desperately it will pass soon (so I am not defenseless at work this afternoon), and thinking about home. About the smells and the sounds, and the wooden floors in our home that just cool everything down on stinking hot summer afternoons.

Until some voices drifted in from the park, their accent, and language, very clear.
Nothing like some harsh German consonants to wake you from a day dream!

I guess I need to stop thinking how little time is left before I breathe in some South African air, and start reminding myself where I am and how lucky I am.
And while the cramp in my stomach is making me drowsy and dreamy, at least, when I'm counting my blessings, I can say that 'I once had a tummy bug in Munich.' Charming! :)

The Winter Sun

I've been told that when I see the croquesspo's (spelling) sticking up through the snow I will know winter is over, and spring is here...

So when I saw the sun shining so strongly through our windows this  morning, I got excited. I had that feeling, that beginning of spring
feeling.

And as the day has gone on, it has gotten warmer and warmer. Sure, we  may now be at the mid-day peak, and the afternoon will bring a cool
wind, but this current 13 or so degrees is feeling amazing on my Very  Pale Skin.
I can almost feel my body thanking me for the vitamin D :)

As eager as I am to tell you all about our trip to Innsbruck, Austria this last weekend, I fear I may just be sucked onto the couch that is  so strategically placed by the sun-catching window at work, with a
book, while I mind the kids... Instead of sorting through the photo's  for you...

It may just be a spook, and snow may return, in which case I really  ought to soak in as much sun as I can today.

It's going to be a very hard afternoon, oh, (sigh) however will I cope?

'Running' Around the Pond

On Sunday, I decided to hop over to the park for a little run. On this:

It seemed like a simple task, slam each foot into the 'walkway' one at a time, repeat.
Except for the seemingly-obvious... Ice is very slippery. It makes the simple task of just placing a foot onto the floor and lifting another incredibly tricky. Hard even!

So I paused a while, and looked around the park...

Very strange...
When I started out there were hundreds of people running, walking, nordic walking, jogging, Sunday strolling and meandering around the park, and then suddenly... poof...

I continued on, plod plod slip slide plod plod, until I realised that the Clever Germans were no longer running around the pond. They were ON the pond! So I rushed back home, annoyed my Lovely until he gave up his Professional Xbox Gaming (we don't play around!) and came and took a picture, because I was SURE no South African Person would believe that I had played ON the pond!

(Excuse the lack of a glamorous running ensemble, but it was a Sunday, and yes, that is an ANORAK!)

So, in future (well, for the rest of winter anyway) when I say 'I'm going for a run' this will more than likely mean 'I'm going to play on the pond'. I think that is a reasonable amount of exercise, what with all the trying to grip running shoes to the ice and all.

Next up, a ballet class. My poor feet may never forgive me...
